Post subject: Scan Dates
Hi,

I am nearly 11 weeks pregnant!
I have been to the docs (who didnt even take a pregnancy test which I found strange!), I have just had my scan date through and its on 5th Mar, this cant be right as I'll be about 16/17 weeks by then, I was also told I would only get 1 scan! is this late for a scan? I want to know everything is ok but if we are only getting the one scan should we wait till that date as my partner is quite keen to know if its a boy or girl?
I'm confused!
Thanks,
x

Hi,

I think things differ hugely depending on where you live unfortunately. It isn't unusual for the dr not to do a test, mine didn't. It feels really weird that they just take your word for it doesn't it? As for the scan date, I don't know, it just depends on the area I think. In my area I am lucky that I got a 12 week scan and have a 20 week scan next week. Hope you get things sorted. Good luck.

Hi 1mum2b
It's definately not unusual for the doctor to just take your word for it. Pregnacy tests are extremely accurate these days so they don't bother to check.
As for your scan dates though, I'm in agreeance with luckyducky, It seems to depend on where you live as to how many scans you get. I, like lucky had one at 12 weeks and one at 20 weeks. The first one was a dating scan and to make sure that there is only one baby in there etc. The second, as far as I know was done so that they could check that all the major organs, limbs etc of baby were all growing correctly, they also told me the sex. I think you should ask your midwife why they are only doing one scan and also why they are waiting untill you are 16/17 weeks as it's my understanding from what I've read that the first scan should be done between 12 and 14 weeks. But then I'm not a medical proffesional so there must be a reason for it. One thing I have learned during my pregnancy is that you have to ask questions otherwise they don't tell you anything or they bamboozle you with medical jargon. But it's only my experience, they may be better where you are.
Good luck anyway x

hi girls, well i live in sweden now-i had my medical yesterday - they have a completely diff approach here - firstly you dont go to the dr you go in the first instance to a midwife who will co-ordinate your scans/apptmts etc be there for any advice and questions and will basically be your "aunty" till the end - yestrd (my 2nd visit to her) she took my bloods checked blood pressure my urine discussed diet lifestyle and it was generally very very relaxed not invasive in any way which was a relief - dont know about any of you but just looking at stirrups makes me shiver !! LOL - if you are age 33-38 you have to have a NUPP ultrasound which we go to on 12th Feb this is to measure the neck to see about down synd etc-the 1st proper lengthy ultrasound will be 17 wks - basically unless you have any problems and your healthy they believe that at 17 weeks they get the first decent picture of the babyits organs etc and they take all its measurements work out due dates etc etc - the midwife has arranged for me to see dr next wk to discuss a couple of old health niggles which will be effected by baby & i will get referred to specialists for both of these in order that i am on the radar should i need help ! 2nd scan will be at 28 wks - after 30 wks they see you every week to keep an eye on you !! i dont have any issues with this - remember our grandparents didnt have all this new technology and they coped fine - x

Post subject: scans
Hi - yes your GP will usually just take your word for it that you are pregnant. I had a scan at 13 weeks to confirm the pregnancy - check how many babies there were and that the baby was located in the correct place - EG Not eptopic and also to try and get an acurate due date. I also had a scan at 20 weeks which is delightfully called an 'abnormality scan' - this is more indepth as alot of problems can be picked up at this stage ( not all though ) your estimated due date is usually confirmed and agreed on following this scan. I would definately not be happy only having one scan at 16 weeks - i would insist on having one at 12/13 and 20 weeks instead. It all depends on where you live, but don't just think you have to take that information as gosel. Good luck X Laughing
