Post subject: Just found out hubby is sterile.
I just submitted this in the Fertility Issue section, but thought I might get more answers here.
As a lot of you may know, my hubby and I have been ttc for 18 months now. Last month, I had an HSG done and everything looked good. My hubby had his semen analysis done on the 9th and I just got the results back today. I guess he has no swimmers at all.. the Dr. said the specimen was good, but there weren't any- not one.
I am kind of freaking out about it, since I've wanted kids forever. I guess what I am looking for is advice on how to get through this, options there are out there still for my hubby and if there is any hope that the two of us can conceive together... without getting a donor. I know none of that can be guaranteed, and I should wait for the Dr., but I just need some guidance to get through it. I can't stop thinking to myself, how can they make something out of nothing?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you so much in advance.

Hi,
i'm so sorry you are going through this. It must be absolutely awful. Have you looked into sperm retrieval? They put OH to sleep and try to extract sperm from the testes. They are immature, and so you would need ICSI after. You really need to see a specialist and get some good advice.
I really hope this works out for you. Take care,

JulieWoo- No we haven't looked into this, but atleast I know about it now. I just got the call today and the Dr wants my hubby to do another test and go from there... so we will see what the next test shows. This may sound like a stupid question, but can anyone tell me if the sperm meet the fluids somewhere or if the sperm and fluid are together?? The Dr. said the specimen was excellent, there just wasn't any sperm in it- so could there be a blockage?? I didn't know since he is ejaculating something, just not sperm.
Thanks again to the responses.

I am so sorry you have had awful news like that, I can't help with your question about when sperm & fluid meet but I guess it is possible there could be a blockage because my hubby has just had a vasectomy reversal & prior to the reversal he just had fluid come out & now the reversal is done the sperm can be released into the ejaculate. It would certainly be worth asking your dr. Goodluck xxxx

The sperm and ejaculate fluid are separate, if you do a search on sperm on google it tells you how it is made and how it joins the ejaculate.

I wud defo get advice from a DR on this but they will probably recommend they do a biopsy on the testes like Juliewoo said. This will tell them if he is actually producing sperm and if he is then it may well be a blockage in the tubes which they should be able to sort out. They can do some kind of procedure where they go up the mans ding dong to see if there is a blockage in the tubes to the dangly bits (sorry but haven't learnt all the abbreviations for these things yet!!!). If there is no blockage and the dangly bits are not making sperm then I don't know what they can do??

I hope that they can find out what is happening (((hugs)))

Hi Hun,
Sory you have had such bad news. MY OH has no sperm, he had a failed vasctomy reversal so we are looking at doing surgical sperm recovery, often called SSR, or TESSA, or PESSA or something like that!! They recover testicular tissue and get sperm from that, even if the sperm they find are not motile at all (quite common in testicular samples) they are ok to use for ICSI and it only takes 1 Very Happy

Have a look on some fertility clinic websites and they explain the procedures in full.

It is always wise to get a second SA done, the first may be a fluke or they may be able to find just a few sperm that would be enough for ICSI.

Good luck

Yeah I would also get the next SA done somewhere different just in case, I mean I have read about how some places don't handle the sperm properly from when you pass over the little tub to them!

Good luck x x

Thanks for all the replies.. everything has been very helpful! I have been researching like crazy on everything and it seems that the odds are in our favor- has anyone had the ICSI done with a pregnancy after the first attempt? What I am running into now is the scariness of the money situation and how much it runs... per cycle!
I am getting the order for his second SA, I am thinking about taking it to another hospital just to see if the results differ any. After that is done and we have those results, and if they are the same, we will be going to a Urologist to start finding out the reason for his sterility.. Hopefully they will find something simple. Thanks so much again for the feedback, much more would be appreciated. Its still been hard this past week. I haven't had a breakdown since last Wednesday.. I had a slight one Saturday night and shopping Saturday was difficult seeing all the people walking with babies and seeing all the pregnant women. I never thought I would be someone so envious of such a common human miracle. All the best to everyone else going through this-
XOXOXOXO

Hi just wondered how you were doing?

It is such a shock to get news like this.

Our ICSI will cost between 5-6 thousand for the first cycle, then hopefully we would have enough frosties left over to freeze a few for another go. The cost of then using these frozen ones would be 500-1000 per go. There are things you can do to reduce the cost like asking your gp to perscribe the drugs which would save several hundred pounds also you don't have to buy your cycle drugs from your clinic, they often charge a premium for the drugs and a little shopping round can save hundreds.

Good luck xx

Hello! Wanted to post a quick update on what's been going on for the past 3 weeks.. We had another sperm analysis done on Thursday the 30th and the results were the same Crying or Very sad . Not sure what is really going to happen from here, I know we got the referral to start seeing the Urologist but I don't know what steps he is going to take, or how long it will be before we even get in to see him. I've been feeling better since researching a lot of information, but I am still having breakdowns atleast 3 or 4 times a week. Any little thing sets them off and I feel letting it out is the only way to deal with it. I hope this whole waiting and wondering cycle will be over soon and I hope we have some better answers as well- the worst part of everything is not knowing what is causing it all and where we are going to go from here. Thank you all for the advice!
