I was not happy with my previous two births at the hospital. I was starved, dehydrated, and sleep deprived the entire time I was there. It was nice to get home to recover from my hospital stay. I was healthy, babies healthy, but there were so many interventions! I didn't understand why I needed pitocin, etc, and because I'm seriously shy and non-confrontational I just consented when they said I really needed it. This time around (#3!) I'm planning a home birth and interviewing midwives. After reading gobs of medical journal and studies, I am satisfied that it is a very safe alternative. Sure, my mom is going to disown me, but I really do think it's what's best for baby and me. Anyways, the midwives I've interviewed do the vitK shot, the PKU blood testing, visit you again within 24 hrs to make sure you're doing good, etc. It doesn't have to be so complicated and clinical.
