Post subject: 8 month old not drinking
Hi im looking for some advice! I realy dont think my 8 month old daughter is drinking enough, she has 2-3 solid meals a day although i dont think she eats as much as she should, i make her up 7 oz bottles but she usually only drinks 3-4 oz, she has 4 a day. She does not drink any water or juice, i have tried and tried but she just does not want it!!!! We live in a really hot climate and im so worried she is going to get dehydrated!!!!! Im getting so stressed about this. She usually has most of her night time bottle and most of her morning bottle, i would say on average she is getting about 14-16 ozs a day. Is this enough???? And is it bad that she doesnt drink water???

hey laurieanne, i noticed your a newbie, welcome!! Very Happy
it sounds like your doing a brill job with your daughter. it may be that she just isn`t as hungry for milk now that she`s having regular meals. its generally recommended that babies between 6 months and 1 year get about 500- 800ml (17-27fl oz) per day but even if she doesnt drink that much, there are other ways that milk and water will get into her body, such as through food, in vegetables and fruit, purees, dairy products, milk/water added during cooking, etc.
as long as she seems healthy and happy in herself, putting on weight, wetting her nappies as much as usual, and isn`t constipated, she should be fine. keep offering her water/juice anyway, if she`s thirsty, she will drink it, its a natural instinct of the body. my toddler was the same when he was a baby, but as he grew older, he began to relax and now drinks on average 8 cups of water/juice a day on top of his milk.

hope this helps,

puss x

hi laurie,
My baby also not drinking water and joices. Even she still breast fed. I still trying to give formula, she doenst take even 4 ocs per day. I thiink she must be still getting enough milk from me . But i some how i try to give her water from a spoon and some times i give her some juice or water in her beaker. She drinks little by little while playing. And its soo messy.... Sad . What to do.

My little Heather is nearly 9 months old and will only take a drink after meals from a NUBY cup which has a soft teet like spout similar to her advent feeding bottle. I have tried giving her some apple juice diluted with water from the kettle directly from the lid of her bottle - she seems to like that, but it's messy. Your little one will come around in time - keep juices for mealtimes and milk for mid morning and mid afternoon and it's amazing how the pattern will take.
good luck, don't worry about dehydration because if the body needs it, it will let you know.
