Post subject: Daytime naps - please help
I know this should be in the newborn forum, but I really need some answers, as I am feeling miserable and really don't know what to do.

Theo went all day today without a decent nap. I tried everything to get him to sleep, but each time he went off, 20 minutes later he was awake again screaming. I just don't know what to do, as he just can't seem to get into a proper deep sleep in the day. He;s sleeping pretty well at night, just having 2 night feeds, but during the day I'm finding it really difficult, and today has been the worst.

I ended up in tears twice today just at the end of my tether. I'm shattered but can't do the 'sleep when they sleep' thing as he never sleeps for long enough. I feel I'm letting Poppy down because I spend my whole time trying to settle Theo and can't give her any attention, and I just feel useless that I can't calm him down.

If anyone has any ideas as to what I can do, they would be greatly appreciated.

Didn't want to read & run. I have no advice, my little one has 1/2 hour snoozes during the day.

I hope you get something sorted for your little one soon.

hun, im experiencing the same!!! leo sleeps ok at night, just the 2 feeds now, but he barely naps in the day, he screams if i take him in the pram or the car, he only sleeps on his front so im constantly checking if hes ok and i feel guilty im not spending enough time with my other son because im so occupied with leo screaming cos hes tired and cranky!

i know its hard but im sure they will get better, i feel leo just likes to be held all the time but its not possible with jaime to look after too. i tried puttin him in a sling the other day as he just wouldnt go to sleep and it sent him off for half an hour which is great for him, so maybe give that a try? if you ever need to talk or swap advice look me up as im in exactly the same boat as you, its so hard and frustrating i regulary have a good cry! best of luck hun xx

Thanks for the replies.

Poogeday - sounds so similar! I can find lots of ways to maybe get him off - his bouncy chair, the sling works sometimes, rocking the pram for hours! But he's just so miserable when he wakes up again 20 minutes later. And it's just so tiring isn't it? Especially with an older one. Let's hope someone comes on and gives us both some answers! Comforting to know I'm not alone though.

I can give sympathy because Sophie is the same, but can't offer any advice I'm afraid!

My boy was the same until he got to about 10 months and then he started having longer naps x

Have you tried leaving the vacuum cleaner on in his room or very nearby? That always put my LO to sleep.
I also noticed the past few nights having a fan in their room (because of the heat) also knocked them out cold.
I know babies like white noise. So maybe that is an idea?

Helen-Rosie is very much the same, she only has 20 min naps, unless we are out and about abit more like in the car/pram, then she may sleep longer so you aren't alone. Is Theo happy to sit in his bouncer/lay on his play mat for long? As Rosie will quite happily sit in he bouncer for a while so I can give Faith abit of attention. I've also started giving Rosie a dummy a lot more to try and settle her which seems to be working more. Have you tried a dummy recently? As Rosie has taken a while to get used to it and find the ability to keep it in. Hope you find things get easier, I'm sure they will for all of us X

Hey Helen - Samuel is the same - sleeping by day seems totally not in his agenda most of the time yet if I sit with him and let him sleep on my chest - he'll sleep for hours! Hardly useful when I want to get stuff done though.

Today I was really naughty and let him sleep on me for about 5 minutes, then I put him front down in his moses basket and whether it was a fluke or not I can't say - but he slept for 3 hours - bum in the air and snuggled on his front! Now I know it isn't recommended but we were there with him and also had the monitor and sensor pad switched on so we felt safe doing that - I don't know if it would be worth a try with Theo?

*hugs*

Hi. Forgot to say - although you might prefer it remained forgotten - but Kerry only had proper naps in the daytime as of about 4 months. Before that she used to wake up every 5min to 20min. Drove me absolutely mental. Unfortunately she was the same at night time.... True little madam.
Her brother was much better - any white noise would send him off for a good day time nap. Smile

Tyler was exactly the same until we started weaning him at 5 months, it was like something switched in his brain and he went from 20 minute naps to 45 and then 1.5hours!

When he wakes can you get him back to sleep at all or is that it up until next nap? As generally when they wake up crying from a nap it's because they are still tired. I never managed to get Tyler back to sleep though he just did it by himself x

leo sleeps on his front now all the time, i was relle unsure at first and kept checkin he was ok etc but it relle is the ONLY way he will sleep, i know its not recomended but with my older son needing attention too i dnt relle have another option atm. i know its best to sleep a baby on their back (here is spain its on their side) but he dosnt settle and i need energy to look after my eldest too...life is hard sometimes lol xxx my mum said my brother was the same so im trusting leo will be ok and some babies just like it! xx

As peppepot knows isabella naps only in the day. She slept more when first 4-6 weeks but after that only 30min naps three times in the day id say! It means i grt bugger all done but hope as she gets older n can entertain herself more i can leave her playing on playmat or jumperoo while i clean etc

She sleeps fab at night so i decided i couldnt complain as i know how hard bad sleep effects mummys n daddys.

I wonder if weening will change issys naps ??? X
