Post subject: Bottles
Ok so who makes their bottles up and puts them in the fridge ready to use? I used to make the bottles up with just the water and leave on side then add the milk when needed. Well George needs comfort milk now cus he's colicky and I've noticed the milk has these bits in it when iv added the milk to the water at room temp but if I put the milk in boiling water it's better with not as many bits do u no what these bits are and why they go when made up with boiling water? I really want to just leave the made up water bottles on side and not be making the whole bottles up and storing them in fridge cus ppl say its bad for bacteria. Any advise very welcome xx

I do! or I did ...have just swapped to cows milk in the last week.

I used to make a whole days worth in advance. I'd make them with boiling water and then place all the bottles in a washing up bowl of cold water, and within 15 minutes they'd be cold so I could put them in the fridge.

The issue with bacteria is making it with the wrong temperature water and then not storing properly. If you make with cold (was boiled) water and use straight away that is fine, but if you make it with cold (was boiled) water and then leave it standing (or store it) then the bacteria (if there are any) will grow. If you make with boiling water then any bacteria are killed off, and as long as you store it properly you'll be okay.

I used the rule that once it was out of the fridge and warmed it had a 2 hour shelf life. I had small cool bags that I took for travelling, and put in a freezer block if we wouldn't be needing the bottle for a long time.

At night time I used to put bottles in a cool bag (with a freezer block) and store is DS room. Then when he woke for a feed I immediately put hot tap water into a jug with the bottlle, and once I'd changed his nappy the bottle was warm enough for him.

Hope this helps you decide what to do.

I don't know how I would have coped having to make up each feed as and when I needed it.

comfort milk needs making with boiled water to make the sciency bit work. So I used to use comfort milk with Alex and made them all with boiling water, cooled down in cold water and then put them in the fridge (for the whole day) and then in evening would make them for the nigh time in same way.

Hiya, if you check out the world health organization guide to preparing baby milk it stresses you must make the milk with water over 70deg as this will kill any bacteria in the milk.
If your options are either make with hot water and cool n store
or
Boil the water, let it cool then add powder later

your best off making with hot water then cooling and storing the milk

Thats what I did for at least a month when my little one was on comfort milk.

However people do milk all different ways and you never hear of one getting ill

My HV first time round taught me to boil the water, add the powder straight away, mix, then put straight into the fridge so it went from extreme heat to kill the bacteria to being cold quickly to prevent bacteria forming. Then I warm them up in a jug with boiling water when I need them - as someone else has said - by the time I have changed the nappy it is ready.

I make 3 bottles up at a time and store in the fridge, if I go out and she needs a feed in the hour take one warmed, if out for longer take a carton

xx
