Post subject: a vicious cycle
im having problems getting sam to go to bed on a night.
she has the same bedtime routine of bath around 6-6:30, then bed with a story at 7-7:30. but the last few nights she has been a nightmare to go to sleep. she gets up, ask for a drink, food, medicine, or her quilt has fallen off. if i ignore her she just screams. quite often it is 9 before she finally goes to sleep.
so then she gets up normal time, and is tired all day, but will not sleep in the day. then come bedtime she is overtired so the whole thing starts again.

We have had similar, when she was younger and recently too.
When she was younger it was when she realised she could get up and out of bed and it seemed a good game to her. we just had to keep putting her back into bed and eventually she got the message but it took a long time.
More recently it has been more like you but up for a wee/poo (but often not really iyswim), a drink, a cuddle etc. We make sure she has a small drink in her room (big drinkls we found for a while casued her to wet for our attention) and we let her come down if she 'needs' something like the loo but we pay her as little attention as possible until she is finished and give her a count down if she is taking longer than is reasonable. IF she starts messing around in her room, we just say goodnight and close the door and leave her to it and eventually she gives up on it.
Of course, its not always that easy, but generally jsut playing it down and not giving it too much attention is what seems to work for us.
Not sure if that helps you, but thats what we do. Hope you solve it soon and that others can offer some advice too.

she has been in a bed since 16 months, so its not a novelty to her. she has a drink in her room and the bathroom is upstairs, and she can go on her own.
i think i will just have to resort to shutting the door on her, as that seems to have worked in the past.
