Post subject: I WANT SLEEP!!!! ok so i knew i was going to be having sleepless nights once baby gets here but not yet!! Jamie has been getting up every night for around the past 6 weeks now due to his eczema on his leg! and i dont mean just once i mean 4-5 times..last night for example i went in and he was covered in blood from scracthing and he was up from 2:30am until 4:30 when i eventualy caved in and took him downstairs to lay on the sofa and watch tv. im at the point where i very almost break down in tears cos i just dont know what to do or how i will cope when i have a newborn waking up for feeds aswel! these last couple weeks i feel are the most important for sleep as im always tired!
i just honestly dont know what to do! i feel asif he needs some sort of pot/cast on his leg to stop him getting to it..atm we use bandages but he now just rips them off so there no good! has any1 got any advice at all to help me before i go crazy?! x x Posted: Mon Aug 20, 2012 9:08 am
Post subject: Its likely the heat hun as heat makes eczema much worse. try to keep his room as cool as possible. Open all windows in his room that can be left open safely also if you can open a window in the room opposite as well as the doors then a breeze can blow through.
If he is having naps in the day may be stop this so he is too tired at night for his eczema to wake him? I'm guessing you have been to the Dr? Could you partner not share the wake ups with you? Even if he is working he could still help a little as you need sleep too? Is little one old enough to get up on his own for a bit? I'm sorry I'm not much help, I hope you get it sorted. Post subject: ye hes seen alot of different doctors since he was 12 weeks old and been on special diets, tried all the creams, anti biotics etc but nothing seems to control it! everywhere else has cleared up on his body but his leg just won't seem to get any better. its at the oozy weeping stage not just dry skin.. OH told me this morning to wake him up and let him deal with it (as he doesnt even hear me get up hes that much of a deep sleeper) but he just gets mad at jamie when he does for scratching as he thinks he should understand that scratching makes it worse (when he doesnt) and ends up shouting at him and it makes jamie more upset and harder to settle. altho tonight i may let him and see how it goes as i just need some sleep!
as for letting him get up hes only 2 and a half so he can happily watch tv by himself but i dont like going back upstairs as i dont want him going in cupboards etc. i know hes young but im seriosuly thinking about putting a tv in his room as this is onl thing that seems to settle hime in the middle of the night. x x Posted: Mon Aug 20, 2012 9:51 am

I really don't know what to suggest I've never had to deal with anything like this, would a cool bath before bed take the edge off? Or maybe get him a fan for his room? Charlie has a telly in his room as tommy is in there too, I wouldn't feel too bad about getting one, Charlie will fall asleep with or without the tv on so he's not dependant on it at all. _________________ My beautiful children are my life! Post subject: Hi, hope you don't mind me butting in I had terrible eczema as a child and I mind every one saying don't scratch you will make it worse. It's so annoying because you know it's going to make it worse but the relic of scratching is good at the time. I remember on hot nights it being unbearable do keeping his room cool will help try a sheet in stead of a duvet. My mum use to show cotton gloves to my pj s so I couldn't scratch. Have you tried the Piriton for children that can really help as well just stops the itching. I found the more cream I put on before bed made it worse as my skin couldn't breath so I got hotter hence scratched more.

Post subject: I like that Idea toots. Surely he's too young to remove gloves that are tied to his jammies? He may still scratch but won't damage the skin as much as with his nails?

Post subject: well tbh thinking about it i think jamie may actually itch more when i put cream on before bed than when i don't.. but that may be coincidence i dunno! i just let him sleep in a nappy now as its way to hot for pj's and he can remove any type of clothing so would be naked by morning anyway! he's like one of them people that wiggles out of the most impossible things! he's so used to it since he's had it since he was so little! my mum suggested the wet suits you surf in but i think he would be to hot in that.. he doesn't sleep with a duvet anymore as its just to hot so he just sleeps with a blanket or sheet..

Post subject: Just try, giving him cool bath and putting him to bed with no cream and you could put cotton gloves on with a bit of surgical tape. It might just help as his skin will breath more then you could putt his cream on during the day. It really is awful poor thing.

Post subject: ye i will give that a go tonight! also im hoping as the weather gets cooler he will sleep better as hes only starting waking up again the past few weeks so i really do think its heat related! got him booked in at docs for the 30th i think it is and im gonna ask about an allergy test as if hes allergic to anything it would be useful to know to try keep it under control! thanks for the advice hun, much appreciated as people dont always understand.. i feel as if when i say eczema they just assume its a bit of dry skin and its so common and curable. i feel as if people judge me as a parent as they always say "you need to just keep on top of it" im sorry but what do u think im trying to do?! and then if we go out in public and he has shorts on with no bandage even strangers will comment or stare and whisper and makes me feel [*CENSORED*]! a few people have come up to me asking how he got burnt..like ive spilt hot water on him or something!

Post subject: I know hun , I remember people coming up saying oh that looks sore you should put some cream on. All it use to do was embarrass me. I was once given light therapy and that really helped clean it up don't know if they would try that. I think keeping him cool and doing what your doing will help.

Post subject: i was going to suggest allergy testing as my friends little boy has eczema really bad and after countless trips to the doctors and A&E she finally got him tested and there are about 6 different things he is allergic to

Post subject: If its oozing or weepy it could be infected as well,
my GD's got like that and was red raw from her scatching and she wouldn't leave it alone (she was only about one at the time)and it took a 3 days hospital stay on IV anti B's covered head to toe in the most awful thick cream and cotton wraps that had to be changed every couple of hours so she couldn't even get at it, to calm it down, (this is after the stupid GP said its fine just keep up with the cream  ) but then once she came home it got much better and now a year on it seems to have gone completely 
Sometimes it needs more treatment than you can do at home, so it might be worth a trip back to the docs (my DD went to the out of hours clinic in the end and they sent them up to the hospital ) to let them know nothings working anymore and to say you want it looked at by a specialist  Good luck xx Posted: Tue Aug 21, 2012 3:34 pm
Post subject: hellloo he slept a bit better ye but i think it was from mainly being tired! i didnt put him to bed until 10pm as OH was out and was nice weather so we were sat out until late and he was playing..i didn't give him a bath as he had one night before and docs recommned only 3 a week..i didnt put any cream on (but put a bandage on) and i let him sleep just in his nappy under a bed sheet..he slept from 10pm till 5:30..so not great but better than getting up at 2-3am as at this time i just took him down and let him watch tv under a blanky and i went back to bed. when OH came down half hour later he was fast asleep! so i really think a tv in his room would help at this point but we will see
