Post subject: Making up bottles Hi girls.
My LO is on formula (Aptamil Comfort) i normally make 2 or 3 bottles at once and once they have cooled put them in the fridge and heat them up when i need them. When we go out i have a bottle bag that keeps them warm for up to 4 hours but what if you are out for longer. I know quite a few people that keep a couple of bottles in their changing bag and heat them up when they need them (i.e. if out for food etc then they ask for hot water) but how long would you keep a bottle in your bag at room temp before discarding it? xx _________________ ![]() *Posted: Fri Dec 21, 2012 7:10 pm
Post subject: I used to give it within two hours of being at room temp. If you are out for longer you can get disposable one feed cartoons (they cost about 80-90p) they are so easy, they come ready made so all you need to take is a sterile bottle, the cartoon of milk and some sissors (plus nappies, wipes, change of clothes, dummies, toys, bibs.....) its impossible to travel light with these wee people isnt it? lol.

Lysianassa - do you still make the bottle up even if the water has gone cold? Do you girls make bottles in advance at home and keep them in the fridge once they have cooled? So you can give them the cartoons at room temp? do they do aptamil comfort ones? I have a bottle warmer which keeps them warm for up to 4 hours but once they have cooled down to below room temp i throw them away! xx _________________ ![]() *Posted: Fri Dec 21, 2012 7:47 pm
Post subject: If the water has gone cold then you can still do it, but if I can I do warm it up. If I'm at a restaurant or cafe then I simply ask them to do it and never been told no. Yes, they do the Aptimil Comfort cartons, I keep a couple of them in the cupboard and whilst Naia is so young and not on one ounce yet I just use the big ready bottles.

Post subject: I could be wrong but i thought it did have to be boiling water so that the heat from the water killed any bugs in the powered milk. I always thought you had to boil the kettle with fresh (ie first time being boiled) water and then use it to make the bottle with-in half an hour. does it say anything on the side of the box. I used cow and gate so not sure if its the same for atamil. If your doing it by the book I believe go are ment to make then fresh each time. I used to make three at a time cool them in water and put straight into fridge then re-heat when needed. The cartons are fine at room temp, I know some babies wont take them unless heated, i was lucky mine would guzzle them at room temp.

so far i have made all mine with boiling water. i make 2 or 3 at once. use 1 and put the others in the fridge. everyone has said this is what they do. i know quite a few people who make bottles with boiling water and then put 1 or 2 in their changing bag and then use them use them through out the day (they heat them in boiling water first) but i wasnt sure if thats ok. if we go out anywhere i am just going to make up one bottle and put it in my bottle warmer and then carry some cartons xx _________________ ![]() *Posted: Sat Dec 22, 2012 12:54 am

Post subject: It's very hard when you are out and make the bottle according to the instructions on the box. The reason that it says boiled water is because the powder you are adding isn't sterile. I used to take a flask of boiling water out with me and heat the bottle I had, then I started to put a few ounces of water in and then top it up with the boiling water so the milk was the right temp.
With my 4th I hated all the heating of bottles so I washed all my bottles and sterilised them. Then added boiling water put the lids on and left them in the kitchen. As and when he needed a feed I just added the powder and he drank it cold. If your lo can have it cold then buy a few cartons just to use when you are out because cartons can be expensive. _________________ ![]()

Post subject: Hi, I make mine up in advance at home (2 at a time). But if I go out & not going to use the bottle within 2 hours then I sterilise a bottle and take a carton of ready made formula as I don't trust leaving milk out of the fridge too long. Then I just pour the ready made formula into the sterilised bottle.

Exactly what I do. I was also told last time and this time when leaving SCBU that the water had to be at least 70c to kill off bacteria in the powder as it is not sterile (as a couple of others have already said), any colder and the powder is not 'killed' or made safe. xx _________________

Post subject: I'm using aptimal comfort and gave found the only way to dissolve this milk properly is to make it with the freshly boiled water. As I've got 2 other young children I just don't gave the time to be making one at a time fresh so I make 5 up cool them in cold water then put in fridge for the day, if I'm going out I take an ice block and put the bottle in a thermo bag and stand it on top of the ice block in changing bag it keeps it cold for hours then heat up when needed. I also use the microwave to hear bottles!!!! Slap my hand! But I don't make them really hot and I shake the bottles so there's no hot spots. Hope you e figured out a good routine for yourself it's whatever works best for ur household x
