I had Aimee at 34 weeks and she weighed a very tiny 2lb 15oz, small but perfect ! I was very lucky as Aimee did not have any health problems at all, she just had to grow Smile

For the first 7 days, she was an incubator which was hard as i couldnt cuddle her as often as i would have liked, she was tube fed during this time but after the first 6 days, we started to introduce bottle feeding. She was then put into a normal cot and stayed there for another 2 weeks until we got her home Smile

xx

Hi Nic,
Great idea for a forum! Very Happy I have emailed the link to this section to my sis in law who had her baby at 27wks and she was 1lb 7oz. Hopefully she might want to join in. Bubs is still in ICU but at last weigh in was 3lbs 3oz so she is doing well and should get to move to a diff unit today. She is off her CPAP now and gets out for lots of cuddles with her mummy and daddy.

Do you think there is anything different about having a premmie baby at home compared to a full term bubs? Just in case I can offer any tips to my family xxxxxxxxx

I agree Archie great idea for us mums who may have been through the trauma of an early birth.

I had Megan at 30 weeks on 6th December 2008 and she also weighed 2lbs 15oz. Luckily I had been given steroid injection the week before I had her which I think really made the difference to how she was when she was born. She was never ventilated at all and was just given a little oxygen on and off for the first few days. She was in an incubator for the first week or so and was then put into a cot in the special care baby unit where she stayed for 5 weeks. It was a very emotional time and I was very up and down. I hated leaving her in the unit but knew that it was the very best place for her. She had a combination of tube feeding and bottle feeding until the last week she was in hospital then they finally removed the tube which was a fantastic day for us all. That was the other thing about it for me, the fact I have other children and tried to split my time between them and visiting the hospital. Luckily my older girls are 14 and 11 and dont need looking after as much as younger children would so it wasn't too difficult but life did seem to be on hold during this time. I think one of the worse days for me was christmas day, a day that should have been a great family day and even though the fantastic nurses made it as special as it could be nothing was worse than leaving my baby there that day. It just seemed worse than any other day but I just kept focusing on the day when she would finally be able to come home.

As Megan did so well from day one, that day finally came on January 13th, which incidentally would have been her birth date as I was originally booked in for a c section on that date!! As I left the Special Care Baby Unit I cried tears of relief and joy that I was finally getting my baby home Very Happy 2 weeks on shes doing so well, shes an absolute dream baby, I dont know whether that will change but she just seems so content. I'm so happy to have her here and I am enjoying being a mum to another baby after such a big gap.

I think if I can give anyone else any tips for having their prem baby at home, the main thing I would say is let them carry on as they did in hospital, in other words dont let lots of different people handle them, be very careful about visitors coming if they have colds etc put them off and just let your baby call the shots. Megan certainly does Laughing

oops I think I went on a bit Embarassed Laughing

Helz xxxx

Aw, your SIL's baby must be tiny Smile

Well, i have no idea what its like to have a full term baby so i can't compare her with anything Smile I don't think there would be any difference as they are only discharged from the SBCU when they like a newborn.

Aimee was at her docs appt today and the doc said that she has the developement of a 6 week baby which i am pleased about as she has caught up 3 weeks so far .

Send your SIL my love, and to the baby too Smile xx

hello all, Ruby was born at 35 wks weighing 4lb 13oz. Everything was fine until day 2 when a nurse burst through the curtain telling me to get up to SCBU now !!! ran in to find 3 docs trying to start her breathing again. Terrifying. Turns out she had a hole in her stomach and her stomach was swelling so much it was crushing her lungs. To cut a long story short Ruby was rushed to Norfolk & Norwich hospital (150 miles away !!) to have emergency surgery. We were tactfully told that she had 30% chance of survival. To top it off.... Ruby was born 26th Dec so this was over xmas and new year. But against the odds the surgery went well and despite the fact that she wasnt allowed any milk she got a little stronger every day and after the most horrific month of my life we brought our little lady home. Weighing 4lb 3oz. Well that was 2007 and Ruby has recently celebrated her 1st birthday. She is a walking, talking tornado !!!!! She has a HUGE appetite, is Into everything and so so mischievous !! My advice would be to try not to obsess about weight and development in the coming months. As long as baby is healthy then who cares if he/she is sitting or rolling etc a little late. Im only just starting to chill out a year on. Lol Anyway sorry this starts off quite morbid just want anyone in a similar situation to know that the LOs are tougher than we think !!

Hi ladies,

Well I had Isabelle when I was 37 weeks pregnant, she was born weighing e4lb 14oz. I had to be induced as she had a condition called Gastroschisis which meant her bowels and stomach was growin on the outside of her tummy. She had her op at Alder Hey hospital and had to be fed though an intravenus drip for the first week or so then they slowly started weaning her onto milk, she could only have 2ml at the start and then they upped it every day by 5ml til she was on a full feed of 65ml, it was so hard as nobody could give us a time scale of how long she was going to be in hospital for as we had to go at her speed and wait for her bowels to start working properly (I have never been so happy to see her do a big poo lol) We were quite lucky as by the time she was 3 weeks she was on a full feed and opening her bowels on her own so we were allowed to bring her home.

i had my daughter at 31 wks weighing 3lbs14oz. she was really poorly, born with meningitas. i finally brought her home when she was 7 wks.

she is now a healthy 12 year old full of attitude Wink Wink

there wasn't alot of support, i really needed it.

i was told that by the time she started school she'd catch up.

the thing i found that with her development, even tho i was told to take it from her due date it still took her longer. i alwys obsessed about it but i think it there was more help and support i may not have been as bad as i was.
