some camcorders do take still shots but they arent that great.

The best thing you can do is get a point and shoot camera that also takes video clips.

I know a bit about cameras, so if you tell me your price range i can probably find you a good model.

i agree with stuart camcorders are brilliant but they dont take great photos, so going for a camera that can take video clips is def the way to go.

When ever we need a camera we always look on the gadget show website for there recommendations, and so far have found every camera we have got for ourselves and others brilliant, so might be worth having a look on there website.

the fuji finepix are really good for the money (around 90-150) - the nikon d49/d60 are superb starting at around 240

ok, here is the top end of your budget, but a very reliable camera

http://www.jessops.com/online.store/categories/Digital%20Compact%20Cameras/products/Canon/Ixus%2095%20IS%20Digital%20Camera%20-%20Silver-75926/Show.html

Canon Ixus are very good, and the canon software is very easy to use.

The particular camera also comes in different colours Very Happy

Now for your budget camera

http://www.jessops.com/online.store/categories/products/Sony/DSC-S930%20Digital%20Camera%20-%20Silver-75881/Show.html

Sony cameras are good cameras, solid build quality and are up to the same standards as alot of other slightly more expensive compact cameras out there. Also has movie mode and alot of the features that the canon ixus has, however with canon you have a tradition of decent camera manufacturing whereas sony dip their fingers in many pies.

Now for the wildcard, its slightly more expensive than what you wanted to spend, but its a very good camera

http://www.jessops.com/online.store/categories/Digital%20Compact%20Cameras/products/Canon/Ixus%20110%20IS%20Digital%20Camera%20-%20Blue-75923/Show.html

Another canon ixus, but slightly better specifications.

We have the canon EOS 50D which takes great pics but think its fairly expensive when you factor in lenses etc. I also have a little Sony cybershot which us easy to use and does good pics and video clips

mandy - we have both the canon 400d, and the 5d and a few lenses.

Is the 50d the one with the live view?
