Post subject: Help - Baby making himself sick when he goes to bed
Can anybody help me please ?

I am the father of 15 months old twins. They are adorable and easy going and we have no issues with them except at night.

They are a boy and a girl, the girl loves her bed and will sleep for England but the boy has become really difficult recently.

He will start crying as soon as we put him to bed, and if we leave him he will get himself into a state and make himself vomit, and I mean really vomit. This happened for 4 nights in a row until we decided to let him fall asleep in his chair, in our bedroom. We make no fuss and one of us will lie there and read until he goes to into a deep sleep. We will then transfer him to his own bed.

However, if he wakes up he will start screaming and makes himself vomit. Of course if he wakes up his sister will also wake up.

Just in the past few days he has been teething really badly so we have a reason to give him calpol night and we get a good night from him. However we do not want to and cannot rely on this “chemical cosh”.

I think he is either scared or just doesn't want to be left.

Please can anybody advise as to how we can get through this ? I am really, really stuck and do not know which way to turn.

Many thanks.

Firstly hello,

This isn't an easy one to answer, the vomiting could be one of two scenarios...first children learn by watching and taking note of their parents reactions, it could be that the first time he vomited the reaction and handling of it made him aware that this "gets me lots of attention and I get cuddle time more"

or

it could be that he is naturally a child who likes to be around you both, feeling safe and secure that he really does work himself up that much that it makes him vomit.

both of these can be dealt with in a similar way, as what he needs is to feel snug and secure away from you both, I don't know your routines but maybe if you adjust a few things and get him to learn that being away from you both isn't a scary thing that could help you. good luck and let us know how you get on. xx
