Post subject: Hospital bag checklist (Feel free to add to...) Any other suggestions are most welcome......
For labour: Your birth plan Dressing gown Slippers Socks An old nightdress or T shirt to wear in labour Massage oils or lotions Lip balm Snacks and drinks or glucose tablets Watch with a second hand to time contractions Digital camera or camcorder (check with hospital first) Relaxation materials: books, magazines etc Pictures of someone or something you love (the inspiration you may need to see you through to the end) TENS pain relief machine if you are planning to use one Toiletries Water spray to cool you down Music to listen to (some hospitals provide CD players) Hair bands, curby grips etc to keep hair out of your face For your birth partner: Change of clothes Snacks Note of people and numbers for them to phone with updates After the birth: Going-home outfit (you will be fragile so something comfy and loose) Breastfeeding bras, Breast pads, Maternity pads, Nightdress or pyjamas(dark colours), Toiletries, Address book, plus lots of change or a prepaid phone card for all the calls you may want to make. You may find you cannot use your mobile phone in the hospital building, Towels(dark colours), hairbrush, toothbrush and toothpaste, Lots of old knickers/cheap knickers/disposable knickers, Ear plugs (in case you end up on a noisy ward), Arnica tablets (may help with bruising), Don't bother with straighteners etc cos you will not get a chance to use them! For your baby: Infant car seat One outfit for the trip home (all-in-one stretchy outfits are easiest) A couple of baby blankets as some wards only provide cot sheets Nappies (approx 10 per day to start off with so usually 20 for a normal birth is ok) One pair of socks or booties Hat Jacket or snowsuit for winter Shawl for photos as the "Bounty" people come round and offer this service for professional photos Muslin squares 3-6 Baby Grows. Scratch mittens x 2 Cotton wool pleats for nappy changes and top and tailing (no products are advised for newborns) - don't use balls as you will use about 50 to do each dirty nappy! Post subject: i look like im going on holiday, my bag is huge! Ive got a smaller one which came free with it when i bought it and thats full of baby things. I bet we wont use half of the stuff but best to be safe than sorry

Post subject: What I did which worked really well was to have my labour bag seperate from my "after the birth" bag. We left the after one in the car til Lewis was born then hubby took away the labour bag and brought the other one in. Meant I didn't get confused with what was where. I also wrote a list of the things I put in and put it in each bag so I knew (and hubby when I screamed for things!) where to look!

Post subject: My OH panicked when I said to him, if I'm out of it, or being stiched up or whatever and you need to dress the baby, you do know what to do don't you.
PANIC!! So, I have got a couple of large freezer/ziplock bags and in each one I have put a nappy, a vest and a babygro (would have put scratch mits in but the babygros have the fold over bits) just so he has everything he needs to hand if he is asked to do anything like dress the baby or ev en get the baby some clothes for someone else to dress!! Maybe other peoples OH are not so useless, but mine is - he'd end up trying to put a maternity pad on the baby, having wiped his bottom with nipple cream and then would end up dressing him in a pair of disposable knickers!! _________________

Post subject: in your labour bag pack an old towel and flannel, sometimes if they are really nice they give you a good freshen up right after, take in something you don't mind being thrown away. Also if you've had an epidural it might be a few hours before you get your legs back enough to have a shower or bath and the "freshen up" makes you feel semi human again lol
