Post subject: Baby led weaning
We've been taking the 'baby led weaning' approach to introduce solids into our son's diet; he's just over 7 months now and we've been trying this for about a month now. Getting a bit concerned though as he seems to prefer playing with the food rather than eating it; just wandering whether this is normal & whether anyone could offer any advice.

This is probably a little late for you, but how are you doing anyway?

I have been doing BLW for five months (Tink will be 1 in two weeks) and have found it a great success. She has taken to it amazingly, although some babies do take longer, I have heard of them over a year old before they really get going. The point of it being Baby Led is that it doesn't matter, they will one day and whenever they start their attitudes to food will always be good if food has never been a game or a sticking point with their parents.

It is totally normal to play with the food, in fact this is how professionals deal with fussy eaters later on, so don't try to stop it! Just offer the food and allow him to get on with what he wants to do. When you have eaten ask if he wants to get up, if not, just leave him till he's ready, but not alone obviously.
