Post subject: Baby Sam, 29+5
Just thought i'd share my story....
Sam was born on 7/4/09 at 29 weeks and 5 days. He is 3 weeks old today. due to a genetic problem my placenta wasn't feeding him properly so we went for a scan that day and had a C section a few hours later to get him out quickly.
He had a really good first week, He was off cpap very quickly and was taking milk well. He weighed 970g or 2lb 2oz
Unfortunately he picked up and infection, then got MRSA too, as a result he his body was totally exhausted. He has been ventilated twice so far, he's on it at the moment to give him another rest, he can breathe on his own really well, but when his little body is trying so hard to fight off the infections they like to help him breathe so he can rest. He has been on 4 different antibiotics, today he is down to 2 types only. He's also had 2 blood transfusions as he was anaemic just to help matters!!
Hopefully today or tomorrow he might go back on cpap and have the ventilator taken off. He looks much better in the last couple of days, He was really puffy and retainig a lot of fluid, so they are trying to sort that out as it makes him work harder to breathe.
He is having 1.8mls of milk per hour at the moment as they stopped his feeds for quite a while and are building them back up again now. Today he weighed 3lb 5oz but some of that will be fluid that he will lose again....he is weeing a lot!!!
Poor Sam has been through so much already and he's only 3 weeks, he is always having canulas put in or being poked and prodded....I feel so bad for him!
I know that the day will come when the infection will be gone and his fortunes will change, its just so hard being patient. I just want him home, but I know he is in the right place!
The hardest thing when he is poorly is no cuddles
Hope to have one soon as he is on the mend again!!!
Does anyone else who had their babies this early feel like they have been robbed of pregnancy a bit??? I didnt have any morning sickness or any other problems, My bump wasn't very big at all, I could still hide being pregnant!!! I know it sounds silly but no stretch marks, no puffy ankles, none of those 3rd trimester joys!!
I just feel a bit like pregnancy passed me by a bit.....now my little one is here!!

Hi i know exactly how you feel about being cheated out of your pregnancy! I did too! (and still do sometimes!) I too had no sickness, no stretchmarks, no pains until the day when i had Connor. But me and hubby have decided that at least the next time i'm pregnant, after 6 months, it will all be a new experience for us!!!
It use to wind me up when people would congratulate me, and tell me he's in the best place! I'd answer ' the second best place! still inside me would be best!'
I did offer to put him back where he came from, but the nurses ensured me it wouldn't make him any better.
I hope Sam is doing okay and I'm sure once he's back on the cpap you'll get your cuddle!

If I get through this experience in one piece i'd like to think I'd have another one just for the experience of finishing a pregnancy
He looked really good tonight, he's back on cpap so hopefully a cuddle will come soon!
He was eyes open, kicking and stretching, crying and hiccuping so hopefully he really is on the mend

omg this post has made me cry its brought it all back for me. I had Megan at 30 weeks and she weighed 2lbs 15 oz just like Nic's Aimee. She didnt have any probs as such never needed ventilating at all but i just know what you are going through. I hated having to leave my baby in the hospital every day, it soon went by though the time and she was in hospital for nearly 6 weeks in total and the day she came home was so fantastic. It wont be long till Sam is home too hun. Please keep in touch with us and let us know how hes doing wont you

I was induced at 37 weeks because i had SPD and i know its got nothing compared to what you have been through but i thought i would have my son Josh then go home but after a gave birth we had a few problems. The M/W thought he had swallowed some fluids when i had my waters broken, as his breathing was very fast and it scared me and my husband something terrilbe. He was in the NICU for a week and it was horrilbe and he was on a breathing machine and i couldnt touch him or cuddle him. The only ones that where holding and touching him where the nurses and i hated them for that as i thought it should be me bonding with my baby! After that horrible week we all came home together. Now i am pregnant with 3rd baby and i've got SPD. I have made my mind up and i am not going in for induction but waiting for him to come when he's good and ready.

Hi all, Its good to hear from people who know what its like, thanks for replying!!
sam has had a good few days, He's off cpap, just has a tiny nasal canula with the minimum amount of oxygen now, although his cpap machine is still there in case he needs it.he is on 5mls of milk an hour now, so hopefully soon the fluids can be taken away and he can just have mummy milk!!!!
I have a freezer full so That will be a relief! Also it means one less line going into him,
He is still on anti biotics and his infection is improving nicely.
I had a cuddle on thursday which was lovely, hope to have another one rreally soon if he's more stable.
His puffiness has improved too, and they are taking his weight as his actual weight now, so he weighs 1.5 kilos - 50% of his bodyweight on since he was born even with all the problems!
We'll just see what each day brings, but like I said, its been a good few days!

Just a quick update,
Sam is looking good, still on cpap at the moment, they want to make sure they don't change everything at once and they were concentrating on his feeds first. He has been taking full milk feeds really well now though. He is only on air not oxygen so thats good anyway.
He is puffy-free now, and looks like a proper little boy again
He still has an infection, he has had heart, abdomen and brain scans and today he is having a bone scan all to check this infection isn't lurking somewhere. He will be on antibiotics for a while yet though I reckon. He has recovered a hell of a lot though and is soo active and opening his eyes and trying to concentrate loads now!!

Sam is now off cpap, on 4 hourly feeds, trying to breastfeed him for a full feed but its challenging!
He had his first bath last night, was lovely to see him tube and monitor free for the first time (they needed to change his feed tube so they took that out too)
He weighs 4lb 5oz, and with any luck he should be home at the latest his due date!
He got rid of the MRSA the clever little boy, but has to have 3 clear swabs before they will let him out of the incubator - he is overdue for a transfer to a cot!! So the 3rd swabs should be back by the end of the week, then he can go into a big boy cot
Here are a couple of pics
