Post subject: Just started TTC, advice on how to cut out binge drinking??!
Hi all

After my partner and I very very recently (like, in the last few days) decided that we want to try for a baby, I am looking for some advice on how to avoid binge drinking with friends...

This sounds bad, but I average around one (or two sometimes) heavy drinking sessions a week (not something I am proud of, just a hard to habit to break as me and my friends are party people!!) so it's going to be hard to avoid this heavy drinking (we want to keep the fact that we are TTC a secret).

I have read that drinking will make conception much harder, so would like to really cut back, but I am also quite realistic and know I am weak willed... I am OK when it comes to a glass of wine at home, just when I am out socialising it's hard to break the habits of a lifetime - also people will notice as it is VERY out of character not to be drinking!!

I am worried that it will take a while to get preggers, and that I will think "oh sod it" and end up having a lot to drink on a few occasions, when I know deep down that could either affect getting pregnant OR be bad for the baby in its early stages...

Any advice?!! I also binge smoke when I binge drink so helping cut out (or down on) drining would also help me to cut out the fags... Would like to know if anyone else experienced this??

one way is to say youve been suffering from anxiety or something so have been put on anti depresants to help for a while and your not allowed to drink on them.

means you get away with not drinking and your mates will think nothing of it because they will think your not drinking because your on medication!

or you could say youve been to the doctor about pains in your right mid abdominal area and the doctor asked if you drank large ammounts of alcohol and you told them the truth and they said it could be an irritation of the liver from the amount of alcohol consumed so have been told to not drink any for a month or so and then if the pain goes then its an irritated liver if it stays then your to go back for a blood test to see whats happening.

a lot of the time its best just to say something medical as the reason because then your freidns will just think your looking out for your health.

or if thats hard to carry through you could make sure you go up to the bar more than the others and have like an orange juice or something and if your mates question it just say your going through a vodka and orange stage. no one would know the difference.

hope that helps hun and welcome to ask baby.

Rachel thanks so much for your very specific reply! : )

I guess it's just time to grow up and sacrifice a few things for the greater good. I am excited though, just popped by first folic acid so it seems quite real now, off to the docs this afternoon to see if I need anything else (best to update smear I have read) so fingers crossed!!

I see you are having twins, how gorgeous! I'd love twins, lucky you.

Thanks again...
