Post subject: How terrible Im just over 6 weeks preg and im trying so hard to give up smoking....i have read all the stuff about how bad it is for the baby and even today i had a scan (they thought it may have been eptopic) and saw the heartbeat and yet i still cant give up....i feel so horrible and though guilt would make me stop but i cant...
I dont know if i can use patches or chewing gum and the Drs havent come back to me...the gyno i saw at the hospital was unsure. I feel like such a horrible person my manager at work nows im pregnant and the shame i feel when i have a ciggerette doesnt even make it easier to give up I have smoked for 13 years though and know i must must give up...i was just wondering if anyone has any tips or knows if i can use anything?? my OH doesnt smoke so thought that would make it easier but no!! Post subject: have a go with patches - its better than cigarettes. The patches only give you the nicotine that you crave, whereas the actual cigarettes contain a whole host of other nasty poisons which can harm you and your baby.
try ringing the NHS stop smoking line - they should have the answers good luck giving up - even if you just cut down it is still an improvement. Anna xx _________________ ![]() ![]() Posted: Wed Jan 07, 2009 2:33 pm
Post subject: it is going to be very hard for you to stop smoking but just try for the sake of your baby, what if the gyno comes back and says the baby is in the right place and fine, don't you think that would be the sign you need to stop smoking and give your baby a chance to grow to his/her correct birth weight and have healthy strong lungs like really think about don't you want to give your baby the best possible chance.

Post subject: Hi
Well done for looking at ways to give up smoking, Though giving up will only work if you are in the right frame of mind to do it, I know there are something things that you can't go on if your pregnant or trying to concieve, My husband is on Champix he started them last tuesday and has stopped smoking today as it says in the leaflet, But it can take up to 3 months and the side effects can be horrible, I would advise you to go to your doctor's to have a chat before you buy anything. Good Luck xx Posted: Wed Jan 07, 2009 4:39 pm
Post subject: i would definatly go with patches or the gum
but if you are having morning sickness the gum just makes you feel even more sick! the doctors always said to me it is better if you have a couple a day then stress yourself out, i started at say around seven a day then cut down slowly, makes it much easier! im nearly 10 weeks pregnant and the patches really helped, it was hard at first but i feel brilliant now i have give up! goodd luck! x Posted: Mon Jan 12, 2009 1:05 pm
Post subject: Good Luck!
Stick with it! Try to find something to do when you most want a cig. If you are anything like me it's after meals and in a morning. Think nof the benefits not just for baby but for you. Nice nails, teeth and breath not smelling like cigs also any weght gained due to quitting you can get away with it being baby weight LOL Trix xxx Posted: Wed Feb 11, 2009 12:27 am

Post subject: Just reading about you all giving up smoking. I'm having a terrible time trying to give up. I have been planning to give up smoking since Christmas and I'm in my first week of trying to give up. Only got a BFP on monday. I've been smoking about 1 to 3 cigarettes per day since last friday. Funny, when I had some tobacco in the house or in my handbag I was tempted to smoke but the last 3 days, while I have had no tobacco at all, have been driving me up the wall. I'm going all OCD and feel mad as a hatter - looking in places where I might find an old tobacco packet with just enough for half a cigarette. Its freaky.
I dont want to be a smoker, and to the greatest extent, being pregnant is a big incentive to quit. Its just super hard to break this habbit. I'm so tempted to go and buy tobacco this morning. I would probably smoke a couple today, but just knowing its there would quit this crazy obsessive behaviour I'm developing. Yikes! _________________

Post subject: Well done!
I don't think I'm doing too badly but I'd far rather be not smoking at all rather than these two or three a day. It really is about will power. I mean, these 2 or 3 are proabably still quite bad for foetal development. I raid the fridge every time I get a craving. I bought some pink grapes for today so I'll just pop one in my mouth each time I fancy a smoke. Grapes taste much nicer. Also, I've been brushing my teeth when a craving gets quite unbearable and I don't know if it is the fresh feeling or the pepermint flavour but it really helps. I really need to find a bit more will power though. Thanks for the encouragement! _________________

Post subject: hi i didn't know this was here, glad i found it! I found out i was preg 3 weeks ago and str=arted stopping smoking the day after i found out. I have had a couple of ciggies since then but I suppose I am quite lucky because since my sickness started if I have a ciggie it makes it ten times worse, and I don't want a ciggie enough to make my self sick.
good luck everyone and really well done. It really isn't worth stressing over. My GP said that she would like me to have fully quit by week 12 (being week 8 now i think i will have). She told me it was safe to use gum and patches up to 26 weeks, but as yet I haven't needed these. I know how hard it is when you have prg hormones making you tearful, snappy and crazy and then the intense nicotine cravings making it worse. I have told people close to me that I have given up smoking and to back off if "I have a moment" and this helps having support. My other half still smoking which is frustrating for me but he will be sorry when he can't chase our little one around the park without getting out of breath and I can! keep it up everyone x
